Create a professional Gantt chart with Excel
February 9th, 2008 | by Peter Manderino |Yikes! you’ve been asked by your boss to provide a schedule for an initiative that you proposed. You have seen those Gantt charts before so have an idea of what (s)he wants. If you were a certified professional project manager then you’ll probably have Microsoft Project on your PC and you would whip up a schedule in 15 minutes flat.
But you are not, you don’t have the software, you don’t have the time to learn it even if you did have a license! And, let’s face it, you have a full time job on your hands leading your team and looking after your clients.
There are so many people just like you and the good news is there is a alternative that is free and you already know how to use it and its sitting on the computer in front of you.
That alternative is Microsoft Excel. OK - before anyone says it - Microsoft Excel
is not free but let’s face it, most people have access to a copy of Microsoft Office
and if you do not, then there are free alternatives (such as OpenOffice and Lotus Symphony) to download that have the features to do the same thing.
Here’s a screen shot of what the tool will produce.
So the tool is available in our downloads page (free registration). It’s ready made, ready to go and its free to use.
There are some usage notes included in the tool however in coming weeks, I’ll show you more on how you can use this to really do some of the things those powerful looks like Microsoft Project can do.
I’d be interested to know how this tool helps you with your work! Please leave us a comment or drop us an email!
Good luck
Peter
